CONGONHAS WALKWAY
Designed in 1973, the Congonhas Airport walkway was revolutionary at the time of its construction due to the technological innovation in its assembly logic.
Designed by the acclaimed architect João Batista Vilanova Artigas, it was built with concrete pillars cast on site and in a long span over Washington Luís Avenue, which could be crossed using metal beams hoisted in just two early mornings.
Despite its importance to Brazilian cultural heritage, being an example of progress in civil construction and Brazilian architecture, since the 1990s the walkway has been deteriorated and its maintenance has been non-existent.
The restoration proposal improves the height in relation to Washington Luís Avenue, guarantees universal accessibility by installing elevators, covering and lighting along the entire route in order to provide greater protection and comfort for users, and the restoration of the concrete structure, preserving the memory of the spiral staircase.
