EXPO OSAKA 2025 PAVILION
In December 2022, we participated in the National Architecture and Expography Competition for the Brazilian Pavilion at Expo Osaka 2025, promoted by IAB and APEX-BR.
A total of 154 entries were submitted, but only 40 projects were submitted and were eligible to participate in the competition. Of these, only 7 were led by a female architect, which is equivalent to 17.5% of the total, and the remaining 33 entries were led by male architects.
In addition to being led by a woman, our project was developed in partnership with the Coletivo de Arquitetos in Brazil and Kengo Kuma and Associates in Japan.
In total, it took almost two months of dedication in this immersion between architects from Brazil and Japan to design the "Ancestral Future" pavilion, a theme related to the empowerment of ancestral Brazilian communities and combined with the ancient wood technology of the country hosting the Expo.
"In the Brazilian pavilion, the ground rises in search of the sky. The wooden spiral touches the ground and reaches for the sky in a continuous movement, becoming floor, wall and ceiling. A circuit of spirals that gradually lengthen as the visitor enters its interior, like the passage through indigenous huts with their semicircular shape, following the span of palm leaves. The form contains ancestral knowledge as a source of empowerment for human life, and the technology used in its assembly allows for a vision of the future; the new paradigm of architecture is to integrate with nature through the use of renewable materials. This curved aegis creates an acoustic and sensory atmosphere conducive to the exhibition route. Tactile immersion occurs through the earth in Marilá Dardot's work.
